SHAH ALAM: The third day of the inquest into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock began with a site visit to the Plaza Masalam building where he was found dead on July 16.
Teoh, 30, who was the political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyman and executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth-floor corridor of Plaza Masalam where the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office is located.
He had gone to the MACC office on the 14th floor of the building a day earlier to be questioned about the disbursement of state funds.
The Government has called for an inquest into his death, after which a Royal Commission of Inquiry will be established to look into the inquest’s findings as well as the procedures and techniques used by the MACC in its questioning of Teoh.
The inquest before Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas at the Magistrates Court here will see a total 97 witnesses including Teoh’s family members, colleagues and MACC officers involved in questioning Teoh the day before his death.
On Thursday, the inquest heard that it was possible that force had been exerted on Teoh just before he died, causing a rupture on his belt, suggesting that his death could be “not accidental.”
Dr Seah Lay Hong, a DNA scientist from the Chemistry Department, said it was “one of the many possibilities” that Teoh may have been held back by the belt for the tear to have occurred.
She was cross-examined by Gobind Singh Deo, who held a watching brief for Teoh’s family.
Earlier, Dr Seah said that swabs from Teoh’s damaged belt had the DNA of two other unknown males apart from his own.
The DNA profiles of 157 individuals were compared with that of the two unknown males but none of them matched, she said.
Questioned by Tan Hock Chuan, who is counsel appointed by the Government to assist coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas, whether she had swabbed for contact DNA testing, Dr Seah said she had swabbed areas on clothing items belonging to Teoh.
Earlier Thursday, chemists Saiful Fazamil Mohd Ali and Zaihara Awang and Plaza Masalam security guard Abdul Rahman Rahim took the stand.
The inquest on Wednesday saw six witnesses -- four from the security personnel of Plaza Masalam (including Abdul Rahman), one technician at the plaza, and one policeman from the Shah Alam district police department -- testifying.

Teoh's death may have been 'not accidental'
By WANI MUTHIAH and NURBAITI HAMDAN
SHAH ALAM: It is possible that force was exerted on Teoh Beng Hock just before he died, suggesting that his death could be “not accidental”.
The inquest into the political aide’s death was told of a hypothesis that force was applied at the tear region of the belt worn by Teoh in order for the rupture to occur.

Gobind: Do you also say that it is possible that this man was being held from a high building by the belt and it snapped? Is that a possibility?
Dr Seah: It’s speculative but it’s one of the many possibilities.
Teoh, 30, who was the political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyman and executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam where the MACC office is located on July 16.
He had gone to the MACC office on the 14th floor of the building a day earlier to be questioned about the disbursement of state funds.
Earlier, Dr Seah said that swabs from Teoh’s damaged belt had the DNA of two other unknown males apart from his own.
One of the unknown males was tagged as Male 1.
The DNA profiles of 157 individuals were compared with that of the two unknown males but none of them matched, she said.
Dr Seah also said that DNA profiles from swabs taken from the back outer side of a blazer consisted of a mix of male DNA types matching that of Teoh and Male 1.
Questioned by Tan Hock Chuan, who is counsel appointed by the Government to assist coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas, whether she had swabbed for contact DNA testing, Dr Seah said she had swabbed areas on clothing items belonging to Teoh.
She also said the Chemistry Department was well grounded in its hypothesis.
To a question by Gobind if she had been told about the circumstances surrounding Teoh’s death or seen pictures of his remains before arriving at her hypothesis, Dr Seah replied that she did not see any photographs.
Gobind also asked Dr Seah if the investigation officer had told her that Teoh may have been murdered.
“Not in many words. No, he didn’t say murder but that it could be accidental or not accidental,” said Dr Seah, adding that she was told that Teoh had fallen to his death.
The inquest continues today.

Lawyers clash during questioning of chemist
SHAH ALAM: Two lawyers locked horns during the cross-examination of witnesses at the inquest into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
Tan Hock Chuan, who is lead counsel assisting coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas, and Gobind Singh Deo, who is holding a watching brief for Teoh’s family got onto each others’ nerves yesterday.
Tan jumped up when Gobind asked chemist Zaihara Awang if she knew about the case’s background.
Gobind asked Zaihara if she had not read the newspapers or knew of the speculation that he was tolak (pushed) out of the window.
Tan stepped in at this juncture and told Gobind not to talk about tolak.
He said Zaihara was a chemist and that line of questioning was not fair to her.
Tan also told Azmil Muntapha that questions not relevant to the witness should not be allowed.
“Why are we here if we cannot say tolak, held, and interrogation. What is the point of bringing experts from overseas?” Gobind asked.
Azmil Muntapha said that questions must be within the purview of the chemist’s scope of work.
“I have no problem with such questions but it depends on the witness. If its the MACC officers, go ahead. This is a chemist,” said Tan.
When Gobind asked to be allowed two more questions, Tan thundered: “Confine to the rules!”
Gobind retorted: “Calling in witnesses and asking them to read reports. We are doing their job by asking the questions.”

‘No traces of drugs or alcohol in samples taken from Teoh’
SHAH ALAM: There were no traces of prescription drugs or alcohol in the stomach, urine and blood samples taken from the remains of political aide Teoh Beng Hock.
The inquest into his death was told that toxicology tests on Teoh’s biological specimens were also conducted to determine if there were traces of poison or volatile drugs in them.
Chemist Zaihara Awang, who is the seventh witness, said she used a testing method which could identify 300,000 chemical compounds to test one sample each of Teoh’s urine and stomach contents and two samples of his blood.
Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, who is holding a watching brief for Teoh’s family, asked Zaihara if she had thought of other possibilities apart from merely testing the samples for drugs, alcohol and poison.
“No, I did what was required by police and relied on case history. In this case, there was no indication that the deceased had been exposed to poison such as in the form of gas,” she said.
When coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas asked Zaihara if it could be detected from the toxicology report if Teoh was pushed to his death, the chemist replied the test would not indicate that, although she added she was not experienced enough to answer the question.
The inquest also heard that a test to detect the adrenaline content in Teoh’s blood, which would have determined if he had panicked before his death, was not carried out.Zaihara explained that this was because the police had not instructed her to do so.
Her scope of duty, she said, only involved testing biological specimens to determine if there were drugs, alcohol and poison in them.
Saiful Fazamil Mohd Ali, another chemist, testified that a piece of window latch found near Teoh’s body appeared to be the same variety with the ones from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office windows. However, he could not say for sure if the broken piece of latch had come from one of the commission’s windows.

Parents don't want sons to be aides
By Jennifer Gomez
SHAH ALAM: Ean Yong Hian Wah is finding it difficult to replace his political secretary, the late Teoh Beng Hock.
The Seri Kembangan assemblyman said that at present, many parents were discouraging their children from taking up such work.
"Even some of my assemblymen friends say that some of their aides are facing pressure from their parents to resign.
"The job has become dangerous, they fear, after what happened to Teoh," Yong said outside the inquest here yesterday.
"Not only that, one of my current assistants is facing the same pressure from his parents who want him to quit and do something else."
Yong added that it would also be tough to find another aide like Teoh, who was "hardworking and had very good public relations skills".
"He handled documentation to do with allocations and also helped with my constituency work."
Yong is not spared the concern from his parents, admitting that they now call him several times a day to check on him.
He, however, added that they had not pressured him to leave politics.

Gobind: "Ada baca surat khabar?
